The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has increased the Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) validity period from three (3) years to five (5) years and start-up business sponsors from twelve (12) months to eighteen (18) months.
DIBP recognised that a shorter term for a start-up business signals to the worker that it is a temporary arrangement, and that one year is insufficient time for a new business to establish itself in a new country. DIBP has therefore supported a longer term sponsorship of eighteen (18) months. If you are a current Subclass 457 visa sponsor, there are no changes to your existing validity period.
Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) is the most common route to sponsor a prospective Subclass 457 visa applicant. Australian or overseas businesses in Australia who are unable to meet their skill requirements from the Australian labour market can sponsor skilled overseas employees under the Subclass 457 visa programme which comes under SBS arrangement.
A number of changes were introduced on 18 April 2015, with other recommendations to be implemented in the coming months.
