Australia signs landmark trade agreement with China

The landmark Free Trade Agreement with China, Australia’s largest trading partner was signed today in Canberra by Andrew Robb AO MP, Australian Minister for Trade and Investment and Mr Gao Hucheng, Chinese Commerce Minister, witnessed by Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.

The China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) lays a historic foundation for the next phase of Australia’s economic relationship with China and will unlock significant opportunities for Australia.

“The landmark agreement will lock in our existing trade relationship with our largest trading partner and will be a catalyst for future growth across goods, services and investment,” said Andrew Robb.

China is Australia’s largest export market for both goods and services, accounting for nearly a third of Australia’s total exports, and a growing source of foreign investment.

Both countries will now commence domestic processes to bring the FTA into force as soon as possible and comprehensive information on CHaFTA is available on Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website.

Following this historic moment, a seminar on ChAFTA will be held on Wednesday, 24 June 2015 where Noelene Merrey, Chief Executive Officer of Perdaman Global Services will be attending. Insights on ChAFTA will be shared by sector experts from Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade, opportunities for businesses to broaden and deepen economic engagement with China. The seminar is organised jointly by Australia China Business Council (WA) together with Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Austrade.
