The Occupations list for 2015/2016 program year announced yesterday will take effect from 1 July 2015 with changes to Skilled Occupations List (SOL) and Consolidated Sponsored Occupations List (CSOL).
Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection said the new occupations on the SOL reflect that there is a gap between the skills of Australians and the work that needs to be done.
New occupations added to SOL are:
- Panel Beaters,
- Cabinet Makers.
“Cabinet makers and panel beaters make a valuable contribution to the Australian economy. Migrants with these skills will enhance the size and skill of the Australian workforce,” Minister Cash said.
Senator Hon Simon Birmingham, Assistant Minister for Education and Training said, “Skilled migrants complement locally trained and skilled workers, help to create new jobs and contribute to the communities in which they live and work. The Government’s $6 billion annual investment in vocational education and training is also supporting our training system to offer a pipeline of local talent to help address skills shortages.”
Other key changes to SOL include the removal of the following occupations:
- Urban and regional planners,
- Dentists,
- Dental specialists.
As part of Australia’s migration programme, occupational ceilings are set for each occupation on SOL to limit the number of migrants under each occupation and ensure that the migration programme is not dominated by a small number of occupations.
