Parent visas allow parents of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia temporarily and permanently.
The main criteria for Parent Visas are:
- Must be sponsored by a child who is a settled Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Must meet the “balance of family test” – at least half of the children live permanently in Australia or have more children live permanently in Australia than in any other country
- Meet health and character requirements
- Pay for assurance of support bond.
There are 2 main categories for Parent Visas:
- Non-contributory: costs from $6,100 but applicant could wait 30+ years for approval
- Parent Visa SC 103 (apply outside of Australia)
- Aged Parent Visa SC 804 (apply in Australia)
- Contributory: costs from $43,600 per parent but will be granted within 2-3 years
-
- Contributory Parent SC 143 (Permanent) (apply in or outside of Australia)
- Contributory Parent SC 173 (Temporary) (apply in or outside of Australia)
- Contributory Aged Parent (Permanent) SC 864 (apply in Australia)
- Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) SC 884 (apply in Australia)
Contributory Parent Visa Subclass 143 (Permanent) or SC 173 (Temporary)
This is for applicants below age 65 years who meet the ‘balance of family test’. Subclass 143 is a permanent visa and costs AUD$43,600 per migrating parent. (Note: the biggest portion of the visa application fee is only payable after the department has advised that they are ready to grant the visa) The applicant becomes a permanent resident when the visa is granted and will then be eligible for Medicare, Australia’s scheme for health-related care and expenses.
Alternatively, applicants could apply for the Subclass 173 which is a temporary visa, before applying for Subclass 143, after 2 years (note: the 173 visas cannot be extended). In total, this will cost more than applying directly for the permanent (subclass143 visa) but the costs are spread across the two visas over a longer period of time. Applicants can live in Australia for up to 2 years while holding a Subclass 173 visa, and can enrol in Medicare.
Contributory Aged Parent SC 864 (Permanent) or SC 884 (Temporary)
This is for applicants aged 65 years or older who meet the ‘balance of family test’ and apply while in Australia (onshore application). Applicants will be able to stay in Australia while their application is processed. Applying for the temporary subclass 884 visa before the permanent subclass 864 visa allows the applicant to spread the costs of migration over a longer period of time. Applicants is eligible for Medicare while living in Australia.
